It all started with my German Shorthaired Pointer, Mavis. I wanted to work on her steadiness, and initially was trying to get her steady to wing for her own safety. I never really had intentions on steadying her to shot or fall, but realized each level of steadiness would help solidify the previous, and what could it really hurt. I thought of backing as one additional pillar of steadiness.

Like a lot of people, I do the majority of my training alone, so I needed a backing dog that would make training easy and efficient. At the time every backing dog was sold out, so I made my own.

It wasn’t long, and people started to ask if one could be made to go up and down.

What we make now is fully mechanical, going up and down by remote, in perfect conditions over 350yds. The unit is rechargeable, and weatherproof, allowing it to be used in wet and rainy conditions. The remote itself uses a 9V battery, included with purchase.

It is made almost entirely of corrosive resistant materials, with the majority of it being aluminum, a stainless hinge, and various plastic components. The silhouettes themselves are made from 5mm corrugated plastic. The silhouettes are printed with a UV resistant ink, and double-sided, giving you the choice between two different colors when training.
